Well Hello there pilgrim, excuse me while I change back into my male swag... ah that's enough implying the Duke was a cross dresser. On this episode, Hunter and John (no Stu this one) look at the work of John Wayne, and in particular the 1961 film The Comancheros.
So put on your spurs and ten gallon hat, grab a brew, go easy on the injun, and listen along with us.

Stu reviews 'Bullet in the Face' blu ray
Monday Jun 03, 2013
Monday Jun 03, 2013
So folks, here is a review of a title I had zero knowledge of, yet was kindly sent this via our friends over at Beyond Home Entertainment to take a look at, and was asked If I could review it. No problem, I popped it in, and was treated to a show, albeit only 6 episodes in total, that knocked me on my arse.
Quick synopsis goes like this - The city of Bruteville is in the throes of gang warfare, by 2 mob bosses. One day, while robbing a jewellery store, feared hitman Gunter is ordered by his boss to kill his partner / lover Martine. Problem is, Martine is pregnant with Gunter's child.
After a brief gun battle, which involves a policeman who interrupts the robbery, and is eventually shot dead by Gunter, Gunter is shot in the face by Martine.
Here's where the story really kicks into gear.
Gunter, under hospital arrest by the Bruteville police, has the face of the police officer he shot dead, grafted onto his own. The police want Gunter's knowledge of the underworld, and to help solve crimes but Gunter wants something else - Revenge !!
Now, onto the blu ray presentation of this.
Picture is presented in a glorious 1080/50p (it's correct frame rate) and a cracking DTS-HD MA audio, along with a Dolby Digital 5.1. This disc IS region free and all 6 episodes are housed on the 1 disc.
I cannot recommend this show enough, along with some excellent action, this show is also wickedly funny, with standout performances from all involved.
Thanks again to our friends at Beyond Home Entertainment for supplying us with this disc, for review purposes.
Available online from JB Hi Fi, Sanity and all good retailers.

A Dummies Guide to Collecting.
Friday May 17, 2013
Friday May 17, 2013
To buy, or not to buy? That is the question. For all you newbies out there, new to this here collecting biz, did you ever think to yourself "Gee, I wish some guys would get together, and gimme the lowdown on all things film collecting". Well, we here at the Midnight Movie Cowboys, along with some help from our very good friend Dr. Shock, he of the LAND OF THE CREEPS fame can help steer you in the right direction, along with us going off track a bit, and indulging in our own collections (of which Doc beats us all hands down).
This episode is a follow up, to one of more recent shows - VHS Memories.
Sit back and enjoy.
P.S - Please note the less than stellar audio on this episode. Our MMC Melbourne wing, incurred some serious recording issues, hence, we were forced to record in this primitive manner. We know the show's content won't detract from your listening pleasure.

Iron Age Revisited.
Saturday May 04, 2013
Saturday May 04, 2013
I wanna beat him !! These are the infamous words, uttered by a young Lou Ferrigno, in a film we hold in a high regard - Pumping Iron.
On this episode Stu and John (no Hunter unfortunately) discuss the seminal not just bodybuilding, but sports film, of all time - Pumping Iron. Along with it's unofficial sequel Stand Tall. We also talk the Iron Age of bodybuilding, the current state of it, and all things in between about this sport that we love.
Grab yourself a protein shake, and a bowl of egg whites, and listen as 2 out of shape guys give you the lowdown on it all.
Enjoy.

A Horror Fan$ Guide To Convention$$$$$
Friday Apr 19, 2013
Friday Apr 19, 2013
Hey, I really liked you in that film you did, can I have your autograph? What? 25 bucks?
And so begins our first ever episode based on Horror. Only we don't look at the Horror genre per se, more the horror of finding out that d-list celebrity you liked in that horror film you loved from way back when, is gonna charge you money to get their autograph, or to get a picture taken with them.
Is it a practice endorsed by us here? Well, listen on and find out. Unfortunately, Hunter is absent from this episode due to other commitments he could not get out of, and John joins in halfway through. So, who helps Stu out on this debate? Well none other than a couple of friends of ours, who know the horror genre better than just about anybody. Gregamortis and Haddonfield Hatchet from the most awesome LAND OF THE CREEPS podcast.
So sit back with us, and listen on. This episode is free, but if you want it signed by us, it's gonna cost ya $30 .... just kidding.

Metal Evolution: Part 3
Wednesday Mar 27, 2013
Wednesday Mar 27, 2013
Get in the pit, it's time to mosh. Then it's time to question music's direction and then, it's time to be violently ill with the state of so-called modern metal. That's right, in this episode Hunter, Stu AND John talk Thrash Metal, Grunge and that god awful Nu Metal.
In this episode, we look at episodes 6 - 8 in the most righteous METAL EVOLUTION series.
Listen as we discuss, argue and reminisce about Metal. We also throw Fred Durst very little love.
See you all next time for the conclusion of the Metal Evolution series.

'Starry Eyes' Kickstarter
Wednesday Mar 20, 2013
Wednesday Mar 20, 2013
Hey everyone,
A good friend of mine, John Jarzemsky, is producing a promising feature film called Starry Eyes that is looking for financing via Kickstarter. Despite not having a Veronica Mars-sized following, they're doing pretty well in gathering funds, but they still need some help. There are plenty of cool goodies they have to offer for pledging some them some of your cash, including some stuff that will be of interest to you Chuck Palahniuk fans out there. So take a minute to check out their page, watch their video, and throw a few bucks their way. Any help is appreciated!
Thanks,
Hunter

Have no fear, the man of Bronze is here. Yes he is here indeed. On this episode, Hunter and John discuss the mid 70's action adventure classi... film - Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze.

No Stu this episode, he was unavailable, he'll be back next one.

7 Grandmasters... With A Side Bowl of Kung Fu
Monday Feb 25, 2013
Monday Feb 25, 2013
Long hair, crazy as fuck beards, no, we are not talking about Alan Moore, we are in fact talking about a Taiwanese film from 1978 - 7 Grandmasters.
A film that falls in between the cracks of 'other' Kung Fu films, that are generally known by the masses, but one we feel is important to the genre.
So sit back as we 3 discuss this little seen gem, along with our thoughts on some other Kung Fu flicks, just for good measure.
Enjoy.

The Bluth, and nothing but the Bluth
Monday Feb 11, 2013
Monday Feb 11, 2013
Ok, this is interesting. You know the term "Something old is something new"? Well, that is definitely the case with this episode. Goes like this.
This was recorded, all the way back in March 2012. It was done as Stu had gone on hiatus, after his wife had had their 5th kid. Hunter was asked to "carry on as usual" with other guests. Unfortunately, just after this was recorded, the then Memphis wing of the MMC recording suites, went haywire and crapped itself - hence, no other shows were recorded in Stu's absence.
Anyway, on this episode, Hunter is joined by Rick Gutierrez (who you guys would have heard on the 'Disney on Ice' and 'Wayan in on Hollywood' episodes) Here, the guys talk all things about Animation wiz 'Don Bluth'
Go check out Rick's sites The United States of Geekdom and his side jam Rediscovering the Magic.
Midnight Movie Cowboys will return to it's normal scheduling from next episode onwards.
Enjoy

Stu reviews Braquo - Season 1
Monday Feb 04, 2013
Monday Feb 04, 2013
So, I was told about this little television series from France named 'Braquo' and just how good it was. I was kindly sent the disc for review, with mild expectations, what I got was a show that was nothing short of a powerhouse of rich performances, and gripping action. Here is the brief breakdown.
When Max, a colleague of Police Officers - Theo, Eddie, Walter and Roxane commits suicide after being unfairly blamed for corruption, the team goes all out to hunt down those involved by any means necessary to seek the truth, and exonerate their fallen comrade and his name.
That is the premise in a nutshell.
Let me say this, this is a very dark, brooding and violent show. Far more than I expected. However with a premise like this, it could be nothing but that, to saccharine it, or water it down would remove all traces of authenticity, leaving it 'just another cop show'.
The leads in BRAQUO are fantastic. Each takes their character to levels beyond what they were sworn to uphold in their pledge as a police officer, therefore a "what level will they reach next" is prevalent with each episode, as each episode builds in tension.
I personally cannot wait for Season 2 of this series, a review of that WILL be up here once I have seen it.
I cannot recommend this series enough, go seek it out, you will not be disappointed - but remember, this is in French with subtitles FYI.
I want to thank Beyond Home Entertainment (and Leanne for the recommendation - cheers) for kindly supplying us with this disc for review purposes. You can go visit them HERE

VHS Memories
Tuesday Jan 29, 2013
Tuesday Jan 29, 2013
There was a time way back when, when the films you bought cost an arm and a leg, you physically had to seek the title out, and the quality was sub-par , at best. Welcome, to the world of VHS Tapes. On this episode, let Stu and John cast their geriatric old memories to a time when film collecting, was more than just heading to your local store, and buying films at a disposable rate.
Where's Hunter you ask? Well, he was unfortunately unable to join us on this episode, but just like James Bond, Hunter will return next episode. So let 2 old fogeys clue you youngsters in on the joy, and heartache, of the wonderful world of VHS.
Enjoy.

Expansion of the Midnight Movie Cowboys
Friday Jan 11, 2013
Friday Jan 11, 2013
Hey all, Stu here.
Hunter and I are very happy to announce our 3rd, and newest member here at the Midnight Movie Cowboys - John Grace. For those of you who have been following us, John was on the Bruce Lee episode (along with his Damaged Viewing co-host Louis Fowler) , and also was on the Bronx Warriors show.
Now, for those of you who know John, and his show Damaged Viewing - John is still a member of Damaged Viewing, we haven't stolen him Azaria Chamberlain style, he is just now a permanent member with us also - so everybody wins.
Also, the Midnight Movie Cowboys will now be a bi-weekly show, featuring all of us, or if not, at least 2 of us in some capacity. Hence, more MMC shows throughout 2013 and beyond.
Now, does this mean we won't be having special guests on with us in the future? Absolutely not !! Andrew Farmer will most definitely be back with us throughout the year whenever his schedule permits (or we all watch a crappy film we wanna talk about, and the words FARMER crop in the conversation) Also, there are a few more guests in mind we would like to have who you have never heard before on the MMC who we think you're gonna love.
So, we want you all to welcome John on board with us.
2013 is gonna be a big year for us.

Stu reviews 'Suspiria'
Friday Dec 14, 2012
Friday Dec 14, 2012
Hey all, Stu here with a review of the wonderful new Blu Ray release of 'Suspiria'.
What can be said about Suspiria, and equally, it's director Dario Argento that hasn't been said before? "The Italian Hitchcock", (One of) The Masters of Horror". We've heard numerous accolades thrown his way, and rightly so.
'Suspiria' still manages - after 35 years - to be one of the eeriest films ever made. Not one I had seen for at least 7 or 8 years, so I was wondering how my reaction would be after watching this again on this gorgeous looking Blu Ray.
in a nutshell - It's still got it.
Lets move on to the review though. I will not spoil 'Suspiria' here with an elongated breakdown of the plot, but rather condense it down to a few lines, enough for you to get an idea of what you are in for, without completely giving the plot away.
Suzy (Jessica Harper) is an American ballet student, who is transferred to a Dance Academy in Germany, with all not being as Suzy had thought, the place is run by Witches.
Sounds pretty cool as a premise huh? Well it is.
I really don't want to delve too deep into the plot than that, as there is so many wonderful elements to this story, that the film fan in me wants you to watch this instead of blurting out every-damn-scene.
I will say this though, the performances are solid, the score is unconventional but completely suits the film, the direction is brilliant, and the cinematography is just - wow !!
Now, let me get on to the actual review of this Blu Ray. The picture image is Sumptuous. That's the first word that came to my mind when I watched this. Colours are deep and rich, blurring is not an issue, nor is excessive DNR work.
The audio is a treat also. We are treated to a solid Dolby True HD 5.1 soundtrack, which captures the ambient mood just nicely, and oh boy, does this film have mood.
Also on hand are a swag of extras. Among them are the oft seen, yet still entertaining 'An Eye for Horror' documentary, A 25th Anniversary documentary, A Cine-Excess of Suspiria documentary, interviews, trailers and photo gallery to boot also.
All in all, this disc is a must have. If you have never seen an Argento film, this (along with Deep Red) is as good as any place to start. I would definitely say give Suspiria a watch, it is the first of his 'Three Mothers' Trilogy (the other 2 being the excellent 'Inferno' and the average 'Mother of Tears')
A big thankyou to Mishell and Umbrella Entertainment for supplying us with this Blu Ray for review purposes.

Metal Evolution: Part 1
Monday Dec 10, 2012
Monday Dec 10, 2012
METAL !!!!!!!!
Hey all, so we are finally back with a new episode. Now, this is Part 1 of what will be a 4 Part series. Here's the deal
So impressed were we with the 'Metal Evolution' series that aired on VH1 (done by Metal doco masters Sam Dunn and Scott McFadyen) that we decided to cover all 11 episodes of the series, and condense them down into a 4 part podcast series, as discussed by 2 serious Metalheads (yes, the both of us here at the MMC).
Anyway, we hope you find this discussion entertaining, and more so, enlightening enough that you'd want to seek this wonderful series out for yourselves.
Episodes covered in this installment
Episode 1 - Pre Metal Episode 2 - Early Metal Part 1: US Division
Enjoy, see you all for the next episode of Metal Evolution \m/ \m/

Stu reviews 'Project A'
Tuesday Nov 27, 2012
Tuesday Nov 27, 2012
Hey all, here is my review on the 1983 Jackie Chan classic - Project A.
It has been at least 15 years (if not longer) since I last saw Project A. So long in fact, that my memory of it, is vague at best. So I was wondering, after I popped in the dvd, just how well would this film stand up today, and the answer is, it holds up well - in fact, very well, if I don't mind saying.
First things first, I love Jackie Chan's Hong Kong films (no, they aren't all masterpieces) Sadly, his career got stifled very quickly once he left Hong Kong for the bright lights of Hollywood, and fell victim to that age old demon known as typecasting.
However, back to Project A
First thing you take away from this film, after having watched it, is the obvious nods it gives to silent film, and in particular, physical comedy (of which Chan is a master at). Jackie Chan's love for his hero - Buster Keaton - is prevalent throughout this film.
The plot is a little convoluted - Jackie Chan is a Marine Police Officer, whose work involves keeping pirates at bay who have been raiding ships. From there on in, the plot takes many turns - gun smuggling, gangsters, hostages, there is a plethora of activity going on in this film.
Which segues into the action in this - WOW !! Jackie Chan (along with long time co-stars and friends) Yuen Biao and the great Sammo Hung, perform some of what must be, the most hair raising, jaw-dropping stunts ever captured on celluloid.
I really want to say more about this film - but I want you to see it for yourself - it really blew my mind, and now being an adult (with a lot more film culture behind me than I did in my teens when I last saw this) I can really appreciate, and also, reel back in horror, at Jackie and co's commitment to their art.
Now onto the dvd of this. One word - Spectacular !! A 2 disc effort from Hong Kong Legends, via our friends over at Beyond Home Entertainment. Go visit their site and peruse their catalogue of great titles
Anyway, back to the dvd - A commentary by Hong Kong Cinema expert, the ever informative Bey Logan is the main (but not only) extra on disc 1. However, disc 2 is where all the other goodies are at. First and foremost, we get a whoppinng 75 minute making of documentary, an interview with stunt god 'Mars'. An interview with Wing Chun Grandmaster (and Project A co-star) Lee Hoi-San, and one of the best on there, an interview with the reclusive star Yuen Biao, there is plenty more extra features, on top of these ones, also. All up, you get 4 hours of special features, more than enough for Chan fans I'd say.
Look for more Jackie Chan titles to be reviewed here, in fact, look for a Midnight Movie Cowboys episode sometime in the near future on the works of Jackie Chan.
A big thank you to Leanne and Beyond Home Entertainment for supplying us with this title for review.
