Movie Trading Club: Last Days Here & V/H/S
Sunday Sep 23, 2012
Sunday Sep 23, 2012
So, here is an interesting idea Hunter came up with - Movie Trading Club. As we are ALWAYS telling each other to 'watch this film', why not make it fun and assign each other a film that they HAVE to watch, and we discuss the film each of of us has given the other.
HOWEVER - This is the part where we want the you guys, the listeners, to get involved. As we will always announce what will be reviewed (or discussed in our terms) next on Movie Trading Club, we want your input on either one or both films. Send us an email with text for us to read out on the show or a recorded mp3 and we will incorporate it into the episode. Please send these to the email only midnightmoviecowboys@gmail.com, and place in the header MOVIE TRADING CLUB.
First 2 films off the rank is the documentary LAST DAYS HERE and the yet to be released (at the point in time of this post) V/H/S. Let me tell you exactly what we think of these films, these films are.... nah listen to the episode for all that.
Enjoy

The Dark Knight Rises
Tuesday Jul 31, 2012
Tuesday Jul 31, 2012
WHY YOU WANNA KILL ME? Mumble Mumble Mumble. Here we offer up (another) review, but it is warranted - it's Batman - The Dark Knight Rises to be exact.
After the very differing opinions on The Avengers, will Stu and Hunter see eye to eye on this one? Listen on and find out.
Enjoy

Episode 13 - Fury Of The Little Dragon
Sunday Jul 22, 2012
Sunday Jul 22, 2012
Bruce Lee. Everybody loves him, and that includes us AND our friends over at the Damaged Viewing podcast Louis Fowler and John Grace who were both kind enough to join us on this episode.
In this one, it's pretty straight forward - it's all things Bruce Lee. His films, his early life before he got big, his death, as much as we could possibly cram into this epic recording session. Here is the result of that session.
Now, this is part 1 of our 2 part Bruce Lee special
HOWEVER
Part 2 will NOT be on this site, or even on our feed. No, part 2 is going to be over at the Damaged Viewing site / feed, so if you want it (of course you want it) you are going to have to go over there and get it. We will let you guys know when it drops and where to get it. In the meantime, check out this 'un.
Enjoy

Early episodes now available again.
Friday Jul 06, 2012
Friday Jul 06, 2012
Hi all After having been asked by various listeners why were our older (and earliest) episodes disappearing off of the itunes feed, I decided to dig around and find out what the problem was... and what was the possible solution? After what seemed like an eternity I have FINALLY worked out where the problem lay, and have rectified it so that new subscribers can access our episodes allll the way back to Episode 0. So, for those of you who subscribed recently, or even midway through our tenure, and were never able to get those early ones, well they will be showing in your itunes feed now, ready for your enjoyment. Apologies again that this took too long, but hey, better late than never. Cheers The guys

The 'B' Team, Episode 4 - The Affordables
Sunday Jun 17, 2012
Sunday Jun 17, 2012
Well, finally, it's here. The last part of our 'B' Team series. This is the episode we swore all along to keep quiet about as we thought it would be a nice surprise for you all, instead of just going over another actors illustrious mediocre career.
Anyway, in this episode we are again joined by our good friend Andrew Farmer as we assemble our OWN team of 80's and 90's action heroes. Who needs The Expendables, when for a budget price you can have 'The Affordables'. That's right, why spend 200 million dollars on a film, when for, say, 2 million you can assemble your own team of action heroes... they just aren't on a first name basis like The Expendables, but who cares.
So, sit back and listen as we pick not only our band of heroes, but also we give you the bad guy, the henchmen, the paper thin heavily contrived plot and a director also.
Enjoy.

The Eh-Vengers: A Review
Monday May 14, 2012
Monday May 14, 2012
After a self imposed hiatus (well another baby in the Baulk household to be exact) Stu is BACK and we are on track to start pouring out more shows. First one off the rank, we look at The Avengers - or is it more like The Eh-Vengers? It is to one of us, listen and find out which one of us liked it and which one didn't. And we hand out a life lesson to a particular group of people out there... and it isn't pretty.
Enjoy.. and don't hate.

The 'B' Team, Episode 3 - Dolph Lundgren
Sunday Mar 04, 2012
Sunday Mar 04, 2012
I.MUST.BREAK.YOU
With those words, our subject of this episode managed to carve out a career for himself, that has been going for over 25 years. You would be hard pressed to dislike Dolph Lundgren, and his body of work, that has left film audiences culturally educated and... ah who are we kidding? Dolph Lundgren makes action movies - No Shakespeare here - just action flicks. This is why we appreciate this great big blonde Swedish meatball. And nowadays, him hooking up with Uwe Boll, can only lead to more cinematic joy to come.
Viva La Dolph we say.
Enjoy

Stu goes on a hiatus from the show
Saturday Mar 03, 2012
Saturday Mar 03, 2012
Hi all, Stu here with a quick post as to what is happening with the show over the next few months. Ok, so as you may or may not have heard, my wife is due, any day now, to give birth to our fifth child. So having said that, I will be taking a hiatus from the show for 2 months. The show will go on, Hunter will be still putting out shows, with fill in guests there with him. Just who he has lined up, I am not sure entirely, however rest assured shows will still be coming out. The 'B' Team episode 3 - Dolph Lundgren, drops over the weekend. That will be my last one for the short term future until my return, from then on in, it will be Hunter and whoever he has on as his guest. I will be back in May, just for now, need to re-adjust to this whole newborn thing... Later Stu

There's no business like SNOW business
Wednesday Feb 29, 2012
Wednesday Feb 29, 2012
Welcome to the annual Coke-ademy awards !! Let's get the snow - I mean show started. Let truth be told, I HATE the Oscars. Granted the last time I did watch them was in 2010, and that was the first time in 15+ years of my last viewing of them, I was under the insane belief that they may actually be entertaining, and that I may actually enjoy them - WRONG - When the Academy wheeled out that kicked-around football known as Barbara Streisand to present the best director category in 2010, I knew EXACTLY what the Academy's agenda was. make Kathryn Bigelow the first female ever to become the recipient of Best Director - and hey - who better to present the award than 'BABS'. Well, you don't watch the Academy Awards, you don't care who wins, so why complain? - I'm not. What I am trying to get at is this - why should any of us care? really? I meean, you have to understand, the real reason for the academy awards is for 2 things - 1) Deal brokering, what better place than an Oscar's after-party to broker a new film deal, or even, a lucrative contract. and 2) and, sad to say it is the one REAL reason why they attend awards - COCAINE, and lots and lots of it. Please stop fooling yourself for a second if you think your heroes, your beloved actors, actresses , directors etc. are not raging coke fiends - they are. Hollywood has had a long illustrious - and disastrous - affair with drugs. And really, why should YOU, the viewer at home feel like (insert actors name here) was ROBBED !! Oh my GOD !!! they were robbed, of an academy award? Really? does their not winning affect the day to day running of YOUR life after the fact? If it does, then here's a dollar, go and buy a fucking life, because like I said, your 'stars' don't really care, in fact 95 percent of them are so wasted on drugs that they applaud for the winner of every category, like the wind-up monkeys you see, with the cymbals on each hand, on toy store shelves - THEY DON'T KNOW NOR CARE... SO WHY SHOULD YOU? Another thing you need to realize - THE OSCARS ARE RIGGED PEOPLE!!! Shock ! Horror ! nooooooooo, they can't be rigged, they are voted for by Academy members. That is correct, they are, but those votes don't mean a shit, if the Academy is out to make a statement to their audience of 1 billion people, they will - the Black Oscars of 2002 anybody? Now, another thing. Friends who know friends. Huh? Yeah, Hollywood stalwarts, who have been 'Robbed' over the years, are suddenly winning Oscars due to public backlash, or even, threats of high profile hollywood players, severing ties with film companies if their 'friend' didn't win an Oscar. Sound fantastic? Look it up, it has happened. I mean in all honesty there have been tons of Awards handed out to Hollywood hierarchy for a sub-par piece of work in their film arsenal - Al Pacino for 'Scent of a Woman' anyone? I am sure people will be asking, but you are part of a film podcast, you HAVE to love the Oscars? No, because the majority of films I like nobody likes... well except my bad-film-lovin' partner in cinematic crime over at the USG (and of our 'B' Team fame here too) Andrew Farmer. And you know what, I am so glad that the films I like, will never ever be tarred with the Academy's filthy brush. Viva la Chillerama !! My final gripe I have with the monstrosity known as the Oscars is the pomp and circumstance that goes with this ol' shindig. The red carpet, the sicophantic hollywood media who tell EVERY woman on the red carpet she looks 'Gorgeous' or 'Fabulous', the bullshit "I'm just happy to be here, it's a childhood dream come true" line I have heard thousands of times etc. etc. Note to coked-out actresses: Imitatiting a duck quacking with your hand does NOT constitute waving to your fans you smack head. Finally, I want to wrap this up by saying, don't hinge everything on the Academy Awards. If you like - or loved - a film that got snubbed, why would that film become any less than what it is to you after nominations? Filmmakers make films for people to see and enjoy, no matter how good or bad they turn out (And yes this also includes the mighty Uwe Boll - shut up his films rock, and he's constantly working so suck it) Anyway, I would have left you with some of Oscars finest moments via youtube clips, but the Academy - bullies that they are - have threatened legal action against the general folk who have them also uploaded, so all 3rd party postings of Oscar clips on youtube have been removed. Because, you see ONLY the Academy are the ones proud enough to bring you Rob Lowe and his Snow White abomination, and they are also proud of presenting to you Jack Palance making a complete twat of himself doing one-armed pushups, and nothing personifies the Oscars like a coked-out Roberto Benigni his win for Life Is Beautiful.ridiculing himself out of a career forhis win for Life is Beautiful. I could go on and on, but I won't. These clips (nearly) all of them are available to watch on youtube, only I cannot embed them onto this site, OSCARS won't let me... just another reason why I hate those cunts even more. Deal with it Stu

Episode 12 - Who's Better... Who's Best? - Wages of Fear / Sorcerer
Sunday Feb 19, 2012
Sunday Feb 19, 2012
ok, so we decided to shift gears a little with this episode. This was an idea Hunter came up with, take an original film and compare to it's remake and go from there. In this episode we look at the original French classic 'Wages of Fear' and compare it along side it's 70's remake 'Sorcerer'. Here's how it went down.

Episode 11 - Rambo: Bullets and Body Parts
Monday Jan 09, 2012
Monday Jan 09, 2012
"Back there I could fly a gunship, I could drive a tank, I was in charge of million dollar equipment. Back here I can't even hold a job".... those of you who know what Rambo says next, you are a lot smarter than Stu who for nearly 20 years thought he said something very very different.
Welcome all to our RAMBO episode, We have had this show idea on the back burner for over a year now but never quite got around to doing it... until now. Here we discuss all the RAMBO films and the animated series also. Please note, this is NOT a 'B' Team episode, but we are however fortunate enough to be joined by his royal awesomeness Andrew Farmer.
Enjoy
P.S - Due to a minor technical glitch, Stu's voice is slightly echo-y on some parts of the show, this problem has been rectified so as not to occur again on future episodes.

Jean-Claude Van Damme - The Muscle from Brussels
Wednesday Jan 04, 2012
Wednesday Jan 04, 2012
Let the truth be told, we love Jean-Claude Van Damme. You know his highlights, Kickboxer, Bloodsport, Lionheart, Nowhere to Run, Death Warrant etc. etc. Well what we have here on this post is some of the low-lights we said Van Damme has encountered over the years. Enjoy Ok, so we've had a few requests from listeners about the so called 'Van Damme boner' we heartily laughed at on the show. Well watch this and you will now know exactly what we were talking about. Then there is this gem from 1984 'Monaco Forever' which features JCVD in his first ever role as 'Gay Karate Man', none of us have ever seen this film... nor can I say would it be high on our priority list. And finally, there was this heart wrenching moment in JCVD's life, when he got so shit-faced drunk he was unable to put his t-shirt back over his head. Don't take it too hard Jean-Claude we've all been hammered before, only our drunken antics are not up on youtube. Cheers The Guys

Green Lantern - Stu's defence of
Wednesday Jul 06, 2011
Wednesday Jul 06, 2011
Green Lantern (2011) Starring Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Mark Strong, Peter Sarsgaard, Geoffrey Rush Directed by: Martin Campbell.
2 years ago, a film was released which was met with such revile and disgust that one would think that it was akin to Pier Paolo Pasolini's 'Salo', or, a snuff movie for that matter. The film in question was X-Men Origins: Wolverine. As I stated, just about everybody hated this movie, and not just hated it, but blind rage would possess their souls and have them spew forth obscenities that would make even the devil himself cringe. I have spent months - no - 2 years defending myself as to "how the hell I can possibly like this steaming turd of a film". It's tough, but it is something though I will continue to do. I never thought a comic book film would ever again be so viciously maligned after 'Wolverine'... and then Green Lantern came along.
Now those who know me know I am not much of a comic book reader, in fact I read comics as often as Gary Busey is certified by the board of health as totally sane and completely chemical free - Never. However, that didn't stop me from wanting to see this film. It had a decent actor in the titular role, a very good (If slightly over hyped) director on board, and a decent supporting cast also. However, the trickles of discontent started to seep out, then the salivating jaws of hatred widened further... and all of a sudden a garish, ugly venom, was vomitted by the neo nazis (AKA Fanboys) and hence, Green Lantern started to (and continues to) cop a daily beating akin to that of a Thai drug runner receiving his daily wake up call in prison with a bamboo pole across his arse for his crimes - thankyou sir may I have another.
But I digress, why, has this film sparked such hate? Let's see, Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan? No. The look of the planet Oa or the Lanterns or the Guardians that inhabit it? Hell no, they were awesome. The lack of spark between actors Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively? Well there isn't much there, but then again, there was zip between Christian Bale and Maggie Gylenhaal in the film that fanboys all circle jerk over - The Dark Knight.
Let's see, was it Mark Strong as Sinestro? Not at all. Was it Geoffrey Rush's portrayal of Tomar-Re? Nope, was it... oh hell I give up WHAT IS THE PROBLEM HERE?
Oh it's the origin story. What's that you say? 105 minutes is not long enough? Sit the f**k down and listen up.
First of all, not every goddamn comic book film needs to be 2 and a half hours long like Batman Begins, Superman: The Movie, Superman Returns, Spider-Man 2 or The Dark Knight. First of all, with all of the above characters, they have a rich history and are ingrained into about 90 percent of the modern consciousness of everybody on the whole planet in one way or another, whether your knowledge of them is minimal or extensive, folks KNOW who they are.
Now here's the kicker, hardly ANYBODY knows who Green Lantern is? And as long as he has been around, he has been lodged far in the shadows of the other comic book characters I just mentioned. So, why have his first ever big screen, live action adaptation at only 105 mins instead of 150 mins? The answer is simple - Audiences these days are incredibly finicky!!
Let me give you an accurate rendition of a couple out on a date on a Friday or Saturday night, standing in the movie theatre foyer, unsure of what to see.
MAN
Hey, how about we see this Green Lantern, the trailer looks really good
WOMAN
I don't know, does it say how long it goes for?
MAN CHECKS HIS IPHONE APP
MAN
It says here 2 hours and 30 minutes
WOMAN
Forget it, too long, I don't know anything about Green Lantern anyway,
let's see something else that's shorter.
Green Lantern as a possible movie viewing experience is now abandoned.
However, twist the running time to what it is, and more importantly, what it SHOULD be at 105 minutes, now the film isn't too hard to sell. Think I am making this shit up about people whining a film is too long? Spend an evening on a weekend at your local movie theatre, I guarantee you you will hear that very same conversation being uttered.
So in essence, Green Lantern is not "too short" it is at the appropriate running time it should be for the first entry into the series, whether it's sequel(s) run longer remains to be seen - so quit ya whining.
Now, the origin story problems... Ummm where are they? What don't we like about it? It is told concisely, it doesn't play around with the origin story, so what did we expect, hmmm? More action? More scenes on Oa? More training required by Hal Jordan with Kilowog to help him alleviate his fear in order to become a Green Lantern? C'mon, you people are picking this film apart now beyond the point of constructive criticism, and entering into the realm of unabashed cynicism. As I have said all along to the detractors of this film, it's f**king Green Lantern - What did you expect, really?? Oh wait Stu, don't start them on that road again, I can hear them all arching their backs ready to scream a whole lotta repugnance into a microphone, Henry Rollins style.
As I have said earlier, I suffered enough through Wolverine, hell, I even copped it when I turned the tables late last year and proclaimed 'The Social Network' to be an average movie with flaws I found through some of it's editing choices. OH BOY did I cop it over that one, relentlessly I was hammered into the ground by folks who wouldn't give up until I submitted into their way of thinking - yo, you guys aren't Scientologists are ya? Just curious.
Truth be told, I really enjoyed this film, I went into it with absolutely no pre-conceived notions of anything, had I done that, I may just have found myself on the other side of the fence, waving my fist in unison with my displeased brothers about how Green Lantern 'sucked'.
And so it is I find myself fighting (once again) this time with Green Lantern. Will I ever back down and give in - f**k no, I am one determined bastard and will never be swayed by the thoughts of cinema's moral majority. I don't mind if a person doesn't like a film, I totally respect their opinion, but goddammit respect my right to like a film you don't without making me feel like I am in Salem in the 1700's.
Oh, and for the record. If you thought Green Lantern was 'horrible, boring, a waste of time/money', whatever then check out this link and give it a read. What is it? Well, it is the original 2006 script written by Robert Smigel, penned with Jack Black in mind to play Hal Jordan / Green Lantern - yes, you heard me, Jack Black as Hal Jordan / Green Lantern.
Go on, give it a read, I dare you to......
.........terrible isn't it? Now tell me again, just HOW bad is the 2011 version?
Don't hate
Stu
For Hunter's thoughts on Green Lantern, head on over to his website and give his review a read

Monday May 30, 2011
Making good from a little while back, Stu finally decided it was time to watch DRAGONBALL EVOLUTION and review it. Instead though of reviewing it, both of us sat down while Stu was in Memphis and decided to do an audio commentary for it instead. This was tough going, although only 80 mins it was a bitch to get through, listen to this and hear exactly our thoughts on this hot mess.
Please note* If you wish to sync up with us, you will need the REGION 1 DVD of this title, if not then go ahead and enjoy listening to it anyway.

Here is an interview that was conducted while Stu was holidaying in Memphis. In this episode Stu and Hunter interview film producer Ryan Watt of Paper Moon Films ('Open Five' and the upcoming 'The Romance of Loneliness') on how he got into the business, how you can get into it and of course the films he and his production company have been a part of. A big thank you to Ryan for being gracious enough to allow time out of his very busy schedule, to allow us to interview him. Enjoy

Episode 6 explained.
Monday Apr 04, 2011

Hi all, Stu here with an explanation behind Episode 6 - 'Wayan in on Hollywood' and the confusion it has caused amongst listeners. A couple of months back, our buddy and head honcho of The United States of Geekdom, Rick Gutierrez, came to us with an idea. For April Fool's day, we would both host each others show, Rick and Andrew would host it under the premise of it being a new Midnight Movie Cowboys episode, and vice-versa with ourselves hosting a new United States of Geekdom episode. So Hunter and I, along with the other 2 members of the USG (also good friends of ours) Cole 'JediCole' Houston (of our Episode 5 fame) and the incomparable Mrs. 'JediCole' Catherine Houston, sat down and recorded an episode on March 23rd - 9 days before April Fools. The show was edited, and music laid in there also, but here's the twist, Hunter and I had no idea what was contained in the episode Rick and Andrew recorded, and Rick and Andrew had no idea what Myself, Hunter, Cole and Catherine had recorded, and wouldn't know until it had dropped into our feed. So, we did release a new episode April 1st, only it WASN'T a Midnight Movie Cowboys episode, it was a United States of Geekdom episode - confused yet? Anyway the link for the show that Hunter and I recorded over at the USG will be provided below. There were a few clues we dropped that people didn't cotton on to (not that it was expected folks were supposed to be looking for clues) but, anyway here they are. 1. There was NO post on either here or our Facebook page heralding a new episode was on it's way - something we have always done with every episode - the episode was just suddenly 'there' 2. In the post made for the episode, not once were Hunter or my names mentioned in the post, it was just 'the guys', which guys it was though was not mentioned. 3. For a 15 minute period on Facebook it was stated about us 'swapping shows' and then the post was promptly pulled after that - a reference to the '15 minutes of fame' coined by Andy Warhol. 4. The Running time of the episode - under an hour - should have set off alarm bells also. 5. Did you REALLY think we would dedicate a whole episode to The Wayans Brothers? So, truth be told, we had a blast doing this. We really wanna thank Rick for participating in this, and also for concocting this brilliant idea. A big thanks also to Andrew for co-hosting this (and not trashing us too much - we got off light, phew !) and also our sincerest thanks to Cole and Catherine for making the episode that we recorded at the USG a whole lot of fun, talking about a cinematic icon. Who is it, well... you'll just have to head over here and find out. also, you've heard us talk about them, record with them, and now they have taken over our damn show (well, not quite, Hunter and Stu WILL be back for the next episode) but seriously, go check out our good friends over at The United States of Geekdom, go visit 'em because they are awesome as is delving into the mind of the ever ticking brain that is Cole Houston Cheers, see you all next episode. What have here is the recording of this summit (held at All-Con in Dallas, Texas). Listen in and hear of the humble beginnings of the podcasters at hand, along with a few other amusing stories they share with the audience. Many thanks to our buddy Rick Gutierrez from The United States of Geekdom for supplying us with this, to share with you, The Midnight Movie Cowboys listeners.
